| "It’s just tops! – having it re-released and available again AND the album itself! It is everything anyone would want in terms of music, especially folk music; it’s traditional, it’s fulfilling in variety, substantial in melody and played with such sympathetic talent. Chris and Denny are a dream team – Chris’s ability on the accordion unprecedented, Denny’s guitar playing up there with the best and his unique vocals adding that indefinable quality that is the pinnacle of the class act it is. Their arrangement of such traditional songs as The Moving on Song and The Roseville Fair are just so beautiful and in keeping with everything you want folk music to be. It’s been said time and time again how fortunate we are that
these two found each other (and later Nick Scott) and this is a great
reminder – if it’s not already in your collection –
it should be!" "To mark the 10th anniversay of the album, Chris Sherburn and Denny Bartley decided to re-release their previously deleted debut album, "Last Night's Fun", which is an excellent idea. In my personal view, "Last Night's Fun" is actually one
of, if not the best duo of this eclectic duo. It contains a lot of
the classic songs which made Last Night's Fun famous and popular -
including the unique and original Denny Bartley versions of The Moving
Song, Roseville Fair and Kilkelly. Musically they were also already
at their height - the tunes on guitar and concertina sound lively,
fresh and full. Nice to have this old favourite back on the shelves
of CD shops!" "Their debut album is, quite simply, a corker. These eleven
tracks are beautifully balanced. The playing throughout is consistently
excellent. File under GO OUT AND BUY!" "Chris Sherburn plays a mellow, vibrant sounding concertina
with a sure touch and deft control, instilling a lift and a lilt into
all that he plays. Denny Bartley, as well as being a fine guitarist,
is also a fine singer - a very fine singer. Last Night's Fun!.. is
loads of fun and should establish them as among the best of the new
generation of performers." "Instrumentally they are like a pared down version of the Bothy
Band. Musicians like these will ensure traditional music's survival
into the 21st century and they do a great job in this century too." "They are extremely dextrous on the tunes...with notable fluid
interplay. Their Roseville Fair is a pleasure." "An oustanding debut CD. The distinctive vocals combine the
anger of Shane McGowan with the lyrical quality of Michael Stipe.
Sherburn's playing is..of an astonishingly high quality... He excels
in the freer improvisational playing with other musicians." "Virtuoso performances from Chris. Superb understated guitar
work from Denny. Fine singing and superb playing...with style and
enthusiasm - buy it!" "Sherburn is an imaginative and tasteful player on the slow
songs, but his fingers can fairly fly about the keyboard of his anglo
concertina. Bartley's guitar matches the squeezebox's quicksilver
turns in the tunes and provides a deft accompaniment to his own fine
settings of mainly traditional songs." "Good, gimmickless production preserves the live spirit. An
album that does justice to all concerned. Their approach invites comparison
with the greatest of all concertina/guitar pairings, Noel Hill and
Artie McGlynn." "A very enjoyable collection of tunes and songs by two very
talented musicians. A promising debut and a treat in its own right." "...(Denny) takes songs that are already out there and makes
you rethink your list of definitive versions. Chris's ability on the
concertina is rapidly becoming legendary." AND HERE'S A GREAT LIVE REVIEW... "Denbigh Music Festival...stars of the show were the increasingly
popular Chris Sherburn (concertina), his sister Jane (bodhrán),
and Denny Bartley (guitar), who played and sang their way through
the heat and managed to get the crowd on their feet." |
